FONDACO'S SYMBOL: A GONDOLA BOW FLAG
The craftsmen who once forged and burnished gondola bow flags or ferri were found in the Cannaregio district of Venice, where the Sotoportego dei lustraferi, literally the "Passageway of the bowflag burnishers", can still be found today.
It was in 1562 when the Provveditori alle Pompe decreed that "only simple bow flags are allowed". This was because bow flags were becoming increasingly unusual and cumbersome and it was time to set some regulations. Thus Mastro Lunardo the lustrafero, or bow flag burnisher, set to work to produce a suitable design for the bow flags. But, having reached a ripe old age, his design drafts set aside.
Decades later, some of his designs were discovered in a chest of drawers in that same workshop. It was then decided that those bow flags should be made; they are still found on gondolas today. An example of a modern design revealing characteristic elements of the historical centre. A symbol with which Venice identifies itself with pride. For this reason Fondaco wanted to depict a ferro or flag on its logo.
Our craftsman is Mario Zago who works in the Santa Croce district (“sestiere”) of Venice at number 1840 Calle del Tentor. Still today he continues to work using the authentic manual skills from the past.
