April 2008 - THE CLAUDIO BUZIOL FOUNDATION AT HOME IN VENICE

April 2008

The Claudio Buziol Foundation, named after the founder of the Replay brand, has announced the opening of new spaces in Venice on 12 May 2008 inside Palazzo Mangilli-Valmarana, overlooking the Grand Canal. The initiative vaunts the unique involvement of the visionary and versatile Chilean artist Alejandro Jodorowsky and its opening theme of “dreams” has already been heralded with words of appreciation by the city’s Mayor, Massimo Cacciari.

Paola Dametto Buziol, President of the Foundation, has commented that the power of dreams was the starting point for Claudio Buziol’s business venture and it is also the basis on which the Foundation – named in his honour – was created: precisely to support and develop the artistic and professional ‘dreams’ of the new generations. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s participation is the first of a raft of meetings and other events initiated by the Foundation under the artistic direction of Renzo di Renzo, and with the contribution of a scientific committee of young and talented critics and curators in fields of fashion, design and art: Angelo Flaccavento, Martino Gamper e Andrea Lissoni. The programme will take a variety of shapes and forms and will involve diverse sectors of artistic expression. From 15 May, together with Niccolò Ammaniti, the writers will be on stage reading previously unpublished texts before the public. For July and August a series of workshops is planned in which young people can work alongside designers, graphic artists, illustrators, photographers and musicians including Matali Crasset, Casey Reas, Experimental Jetset and Anthony Burrill. As well as the meetings with the authors, the Foundation is also planning an “artist in residence” event, the opening occasion of which will also show creations by Luca Trevisani and Nico Vascellari, the first two artists chosen. Their works will be displayed at the same time in different rooms of the Foundation within ‘Daydream fields’, an artistic journey curated by Andrea Lissoni. On 12 May the Foundation’s new website will be going live as an open window on young creativity. It contains an information base for the programme of events and visitors to the site can take an active part in the publication of works and projects, and in taking up discussions with the prestigious visiting curators who will periodically be looking at the the entries. The Foundation’s activities will also include the awarding of study grants, the support of cultural and artistic projects, and the seeking of research synergies and partnerships with schools, institutions and organisations that can share their goals. The Foundation has already lived up to its promise of setting up a three-year chair degree course named in honour of Claudio Buziol and assigned to Maria Luisa Frisa at Venice University Architecture faculty (IUAV). The course, which is in Fashion Design and which has also prompted the Multi-form event created for the Salone del Mobile (Milan’s international Furniture Show), has been the vehicle for the launching an international competition “A Box of Dreams”, aimed at creative young designers and now in its second edition, along with other related initiatives.
