September 2010

On 9 September, a fairytale party in St. Mark’s Square! Five hundred carefully-chosen guests and three acclaimed artists all paid homage to the matchless Caffè della Piazza on the occasion of its 290th anniversary. With the magical St. Mark’s Square as the backdrop and with 100 candles to light up the setting, the three artists made their admirable performances, with the direction of Fondaco.

Actor Silvio Orlando, sitting at one of the historical tavolini, read a fragment from Joseph Brodsky’s Fondamenta degli incurabili. Then Fabrizio Plessi enacted 290 secondi liquidi (290 liquid seconds), an evocative composition of flows of water that gave life to the Caffè’s logo to a rendition of Palladio Allegro by Karl Jenkins. Last but not least, jazz pianist Francesco Maccianti enthralled the guests with his music, played on a legendary Steinway. All were enthralled by the occasion: political leaders and exponents from the world of culture, from all over Italy. All, for one night, treated to a trip back in time, to imagine how an evening would have been in Piazza San Marco when the historical Caffè first opened, thanks to the incredible idea of Floriano Francesconi.
