December 2011 THE STATUTES OF THE FOUR PROPHETS RETURN IN GRAND STYLE TO THE ZEN CHAPEL IN THE BASILICA OF SAN MARCO
Their names are Habakkuk, David, Zephaniah and Zechariah and they are the four biblical prophets that, as marble statues, have decorated the Zen Chapel of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice since as far back as the 13th century. Centuries ago the chapel was the entrance to the Basilica for those arriving from the sea (it was called“Porta da Mar” or the “door from the sea”) and time and the weather had caused the statues of the prophets to lose much of their splendour hence the reason why THUN, as part of the THUN for Art in Italy project, decided to fund the artistic restoration of the prophet statues. It was a gesture of affection for the Basilica, as the lagoon city’s architectural masterpiece, which is envied worldwide but which is perhaps the treasure that is most at risk from the ravages of time.
